Acupuncture: Is it worth the hype?

We’ve all heard of Acupuncture right? The little needles that get put all over your body and it’s supposed to help with pain. But what actually is it? We’ve delved into what acupuncture is so you can get the facts and know if it’s right for you!

So what is it?

Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique originating from Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific body points to stimulate nerves, muscles, and improve energy flow, known as Qi. It has been slightly westernised to cover more of a musculoskeletal benefit such as release muscle tightness and calm nerve irritation like sciatica. Additionally, it is widely used to relieve pain, improve sleep, reduce stress, reduce inflammation, treat chronic conditions like headaches or fibromyalgia, and promote natural healing.

It can also be used for more mental/emotional healing, and is regularly used for depression, anxiety, stress and addictions.

Is it painful?

Not really. Although the sound of 29 needles being put right next to your spine sounds like it should hurt right? Most people feel minimal to no pain, with only a slight scratch sensation when the needle is inserted. The feeling of “De Qi” can be described as a heavy, achy or tingling sensation, but isn’t described as uncomfortable. It is actually very common for people to find it relaxing and even doze off during treatment!

What’s De Qi?

De qi refers to the unique, therapeutic sensation, such as aching, numbness, tingling, or heaviness—felt by a patient when an acupuncture needle is correctly placed and manipulated, signalling the "arrival of vital energy". Some people are strong reactors, and their body can feel De Qi as an intense sensation. Others may not feel too much. Even if you do not feel any De Qi, it does not mean the acupuncture treatment will not work! Your therapist can also tell if the point is correct by feeling for a “sticky” sensation on the needle when adjusting it.

Give me the numbers

Let’s look at the facts from some recent studies:

  • A 2024 study of 500 patients showed that 12 acupuncture sessions produced a 75.5% reduction in pain severity.

  • A 2017 meta-analysis found acupuncture significantly reduced pain, with approximately 90% of the benefit relative to controls sustained at 12 months.

  • A 2024 study indicated a 53.1% improvement in sleep quality after 12 sessions.

  • In a 755-patient study, acupuncture and counseling significantly reduced the severity of depression for up to 12 months.

Are there any risks?

With any treatment involving needles, there is always a risk. Common side effects include minor bleeding, bruising, soreness at the needle site, and, rarely, dizziness or fainting.

There can however be serious, though rare, risks including infection, punctured organs (such as pneumothorax), and nerve injury.

This is why it is recommended to see a fully qualified, licensed and insured practitioner!!

So what we thinking now…

Overall, acupuncture sounds like a rh muscle treatment for most people’s pain and issues. However it is important to understand the use effects, and that most treatments need to be done regularly! One session of acupuncture probably won’t give long term benefits, with most studies showing 12 weeks of treatment giving the best results. It is an investment, but with all the benefits you can gain, it looks like it’s worth the money!
